Farewell, Old Friend

The year was 2005, driving around in my 1994 Toyota Corolla Seca. I drove past this used car dealer in Preston and dropped in to have a look at some potential new cars. I saw this bright Red 2003 Volkswagen Golf in the centre of the lot. I remember it was late afternoon and it had been raining all day. I had a quick look at it, sat in it, but that was it. The dealer was about to close. Weeks past, then months and when went back past the same place and it was closed. There was nothing there any more and I was sad. I couldn’t stop thinking about this little red golf I had seen. I started seeing more VW’s on the road too. Taunting me, teasing me, like I was never going to own one.

About 6 months had passed and I started looking for cars again. I remember a work colleague at the time said they had got their car from Bayford Group. So I looked them up and went for a visit. It was a Sunday and I didn’t know they were all closed on Sundays. So I went back the next weekend to have a closer look. Guess what I found? THE SAME CAR! The exact same Red Golf I had saw over half a year ago. It hadn’t been sold yet. Like it was waiting for me to find it again. I took it for a test drive and also took some other models for a drive too. A Mark V Golf, it was nice, but it had way to many km’s for the price they wanted. I went back the following week with my parents. We all took it for a spin and all loved it. So I bit the bullet and got it that very day! I was so happy! It was like after seeing it for that very first time, it was meant to be. It was only 4 years old. 16,500 on the clock. Basically brand new.

My Car & I spent so much time together. Travelling to the beach. Ballarat for several gig road trips. Late night kebab runs with Stef. Most of it was amazing. Some of it, not so much. Car accidents, towing due to gearbox, running out of fuel due to a faulty gauge (that’s my excuse & I stick by it LOL). I am very lucky to have people in my life that have been there to help when the car broke down. My mechanic has been an absolute legend. Getting me back on the road quickly & (mostly) painlessly. Letting me pay a big repair bill over a few weeks. Not many places will let you do that. I will forever be grateful to him & his crew.

It’s been 10 years of love and heartache, mostly love. 10 years of getting me where I need to go. 10 years and 100,000+ km’s of being my chariot. 10 years of my life I was happy to spend with you.

But, sadly, it is time to move on. Time to get a car that is not only nice and new, but financially reliable. Tomorrow, I hand over your keys and pick up my brand new Hyundai i30. It’s white, it’s got leather seats, it’s got all the new car warranty and bonuses you expect. Capped priced servicing, road side assistance. Even my car insurance covers towing. A new chariot I can hopefully call my friend for another 10 years. I hope you find a new home where someone will love you as much as I have. I am both sad and happy. Stef and I have already given the new car a name. My Golf was red, so we called it Ruby. The i30 is White, so we have called it Snowy.

It’s so hard to say farewell to something that has been part of your life for that long. But it is for the best.

Ruby, I will miss you :'(

A Victory For myki Users & People That Lose Things

Since the introduction of myki to Victoria’s Public Transport system back in 2008, it has been riddled with problems and has had it’s fare (pun intended) share of controversy. Personally I have never really had any issues with the system. I mainly commute using the Bus/Tram network, so I’ve avoided those “crazy queues” at the gates of a train station. That was until last week…

On my registered myki account I currently have eight cards. My girlfriend Stef and myself share the registered account. Mostly because it is easier to keep track on spending & balances etc with just the one log-in. Unfortunately, over time we have lost cards and Stef had lost her myki last week. So now, we only have one active card left on our account. Stef got a new card, gave me the number to register it, but I couldn’t. Apparently you can only have a total of eight cards on a registered account. So I finally decided to fill out the forms required to transfer all balances to the remaining active card and cancel/archive the seven inactive cards. After about a week, I get this email stating that I can only have eight cards in total. This includes archived cards. I was stuck. Couldn’t do anything. I was told I had to create a new myki registration account to enable more cards. Now that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.

Just think you are a family of five. You have all five myki cards registered to the one account. Each of these cards have an expiry. Since you activated them at the same time, they will all expire on the same date. You apply to replace all five expired cards, yet you can only register three of these because of the eight card limit. It’s just not right.

It pushed me to make a formal complaint. After a quick response yesterday, it was passed onto the Public Transport Victoria (PTV) Advocate. The Advocate is the last resort before you go to the PTV Ombudsmen. After a quick discussion with the lovely lady from the PTV Advocate’s office and outlining several examples on how the system. She agreed and said something needs to change. We discussed how it could be improved and she escalated the case to include the following:

I understand that you have raised your complaint with PTV but you are not satisfied with the outcome of that complaint.
My understanding of your complaint is that:

  • you have 8 myki cards registered to your myki account, and 7 of those cards have been lost
  • you hold possession of one registered myki card number 30*********7161 (current active card)
  • you contacted PTV to request for the remaining balances on the lost cards to be transferred to the current active card, you have completed application forms for the balance transfers
  • you also requested to added additional myki cards to your registered account, however PTV advised you that you could not add more than 8 cards to your online account
  • PTV suggested for you to create a new registered account to register the new card
  • you are dissatisfied with the solution offered by PTV as it would require you to monitor two card cards and two separate accounts

You have advised that to resolve your complaint, you would like PTV to:

  • allow you to add a new myki card to your existing online myki account

Today I received a response from the PTV Advocate. Within 24hrs. I was impressed. I was even more impressed when I read the details of the email.

In response to your complaint, I referred to and assessed the information provided by both you and PTV to conduct an investigation into your case. After reviewing all relevant information, I can advise the following:

  • PTV’s business improvement team has scheduled an IT change to remove myki cards that reflect a ‘refunded’ or ‘expired’ status from registered customer’s active myki card lists
  • once a myki card reflects a ‘refunded’ or ‘expired’ status, it will free up additional space on registered customer accounts, allowing customers to add additional cards to their accounts
  • the IT change is scheduled for deployment on 23 May 2015. This is the earliest date available due to other business improvement changes taking priority
  • as you have requested for a balance transfer of your 7 lost cards to your current myki card number 30*********7161, those cards will reflect a ‘refunded’ status once the transfers are processed. Post 23 May 2015, you will be able to add new myki cards to your registered account
  • unfortunately, PTV cannot offer an alternative solution prior to the scheduled IT change
  • PTV sincerely regrets that you are impacted by this issue, and apologises for the inconvenience caused.

The evidence that I referred to when conducting my investigation consisted of reference to an IT change scheduled for May 2015.

My view of the complaint
I have considered your comments and the information you provided and the evidence sourced from PTV. Based on this information, I believe a reasonable way of resolving the complaint would be to outline that PTV has a fix in place to allow registered customer’s to add new myki cards to their registered account – as detailed above.

victory

VICTORY! I am so happy and pleased with the response. Not only is this going to assist myself because we’re always losing myki’s, but is going to benefit every Public Transport & myki user in the state! I am interested to know if you have had this same issue with the card limit? Or perhaps you don’t lose things lol. So for now, we wait. I will post a follow up at the end of May. Let’s just hope they process the change on time.

I would be interested to hear if others have had the same issue with the card limit. Did you try to do something about it? What response did you get? Feel free to discuss in the comments 🙂

Happy Travels!

Triple J’s Hottest 100 of 2014

It’s that time of year again! The time where we spend days upon days trying to select 10 songs to vote for in Triple J’s Hottest 100. This year, Triple J has been the only radio station I have listened too. I was sick and tired of the crap on commercial radio. It is the same old, boring “entertainment”. The music is okay, the shows, not so much. I tried to keep my short list down to 35 again, but that was proving difficult.

To be perfectly honest, Ed Sheeran would have been in my Top 10. However, his tracks are note listed on the voting page. I know I can add them, but there is no real point voting if it won’t poll.
So, here are my Top 4 albums & Top 40 songs of 2014.

**UPDATE**
I have added the predictions from the @socialhottest on twitter next to each of my votes using [x]. Actual votes will be updated using {x}.

Vinyl, My New Obsession

It has been way too long since I last posted on here! Almost a year!!

Over the last few months I have started to really get into Vinyl. I have always owned a couple of LP’s, I’ve just never had the means to play them. So a few months ago I decided to dust of Dad’s old NAD 5120 & give it a whirl. At first it wasn’t working 100%. I thought it was the turntable. So I jumped on eBay and found an exact same model for a cheap as price & snapped it up! After setting it all up, it was actually the amplifier that was the issue & not the turntable. All I needed was to get a Phono Pre-Amp from JayCar & I was all set.

After getting some extra bits & pieces, including a long ass RCA cable to sit the turntable where I wanted, it was working perfectly! The only thing I have to do is switch the audio source on the amplifier. My first spin was The Living End’s “The Ending Is Just The Beginning Repeating”. I’ve had this LP for as long as the record has been released. I even managed to get it signed by the TLE boys at the Retrospective Tour back in 2012. Since I started, I have slowly been building a collection, that currently consists of the following (in order of purchase):

I have found myself searching for vinyl instead of CD’s of late. CD’s just get ripped to my computer & never get used again. There is just something about vinyl that I am finding enjoyment in. It’s about the album art, the design of the disc itself. Much like the how Kingswood’s debut album, Microscopic Wars is this wicked Black & Red translucent splatter! (Original photo on @kingswoodfans instagram, posted by myself). I just feel more “part of the music” so to speak. Other Vinyl nerds would say the same thing. I also managed to get my Ed Sheeran X (Multiply) signed by the man himself when I met him!

I guess my collection will continue to grow, and I am perfectly okay with that!

#PAXaus 2013

Sadly I never actually finished this post. I ended up winning those headphones 😀

It wasn’t that long ago that I campaigned to win a trip to attend the San Diego Comic Con. Unfortunately I was unsuccessful. My partner, Stef & I were pretty heartbroken about it. We worked our ass off to try win. Stef more than anyone!

Shortly after the winners were announced, Stef discovered a Pokémon event was being held by Nintendo Australia at Melbourne’s Federation Square. The purpose of the event was to scout for Pokémon Masters & battle them against each other to represent Australia at the World Pokémon Championship in Canada.

This event sounded like a lot of fun! The best part was that, all entries had a chance win a ticket to attend the Penny Arcade Expo, PAXaus. The idea was to battle against other Pokémon Masters & qualify to attend the Australian Championship battle at PAXaus. So, in an attempt to win tickets to a sold out event, Stef & I went along in then hope that Stef would qualify & could attend PAXaus.

The day had arrived & I was up early & ready to pick up Stef to make our way into Fed Square to join in the fun. I had received a text from Stef over night saying that she wanted to sleep in a bit. So I waited a little longer before I headed over to pick her up. I arrived & she was still asleep! I had to drag her out of bed & get her motivated to go! I wanted her to attend the event because I wanted her to go to PAXaus! After some convincing, we were on our way! I was stressing out because registrations were supposed to close at 11am & I thought we were not going to make it. As it turned out, they left registrations open all day.

We finally arrived, Stef registered & we settled in for a long day! We were sitting at the back of the BMW Edge Centre, just playing our DS’s. Stef was training up her Pokémon as much as possible before her first round battle. Stef started talking to this lovely girl, Anne-Marie, about Pokémon. I don’t know how we got to this idea, but I decided to register to play & use Stef’s game. The idea was that I too would have a chance to attend PAXaus.
I even told the lovely girl at the registration desk my plan! Abby thought it was a brilliant idea! She even hinted that we may all receive a ticket to PAXaus due to the low registration numbers. I have never played this game before in my life, but I wanted to go to this event so bad! As it turned out, my opponent was Anne-Marie, the girl we had only just met!

The day went on & it finally got around to battle time for Stef. Unfortunately she did not win her first round. This sucked! I wanted her to win the first round so bad so that she got a ticket to PAXaus.
Shortly after, it was my turn to battle against Anne-Marie. I thought for sure she would win! Considering I have never played this game before! I do not know how, maybe it was just sheer luck, but I ended up winning! I felt bad because we had just befriended this person, then I just beat her at her own game 🙁

The celebrations were short lived when I got absolutely destroyed in the second round! It was over so quickly! Oh well, it was worth a try! It was now late in the afternoon & we were exhausted! After a short chat with Abby about how we will find out about the tickets, we headed home.

About a week after we attended, we both received emails stating that we qualified for a ticket to PAXaus!! YAY!! We were going!!

Pokemon Championship

I couldn’t believe our luck! Although something tells me that everyone that attended the battle event got a pass! Attending the sold out Penny Arcade Expo for an entire day was great as we would of been at SDCC that weekend! As we only had a day pass, we wanted to make the most of it! The decision was made that we would get there early & stay as late as possible!

The day finally arrived and we were off to the Penny Arcade Expo thanks to Nintendo! How exciting!

We got there repetitively early & registered at the info desk to receive our lanyard & ticket for entry. There were already heaps of people all lined up ready to take on PAXaus, at least a thousand, maybe more!

Shortly after 10am we were let in! You would expect that it would be a mad rush, people trampling over everyone to get in. It was the exact opposite of that! Everyone was calm, collected & was looking out for others! Right then & there, before I had seen anything, I knew this would be the best convention I have ever attended.

Stef & I were amazed at how much space PAXaus had! There was so much room to move around & through the massive crowds! Not long after we entered, we were greeted by the lovely people over at the Sennheiser booth. They were demoing their new, high performance, Sennheiser Momentum On-Ear Headphones.

I was playing around on the iPad & listening to these awesome headphones when one of the Sennheiser models told me about how I could win a pair for myself. Basically, all I had to do

Iron Man 3

First of all, there will be no spoilers in this post!

Ever since The Avengers came out 12 months ago I have been waiting in anticipation for the release of Iron Man 3.

Well, I have just returned home from a double feature at IMAX Melbourne of Avengers & Iron Man 3. Both displayed in stunning 3D.
IMAX put on a great evening! Iron Man 3 posters! (I scored one of these at the Oblivion event last week too). Mother energy drink to keep us awake! And a lucky door prize that consisted of a framed set of Avengers & Iron Man 3 posters! I did not win this, alas 🙁

After seeing The Avengers on the big screen again, I have forgotten how much I love this film!
Actually, that is a lie! I have ALWAYS loved this film! I just fell in love all over again! I mean, Just check out my wallpaper that has not changed in 12 months!

Avengers Wallpaper

Avengers was great in IMAX! It is a real shame that it was a special one off just for the release of Iron Man 3. They would make quite a bit of coin if they released it for a limited season.

Anyway, enough about Avengers! I am here to talk about IRON MAN 3!

Overall, I loved the film! So many moments in it made me question “what the hell is going on?” Then BAM! It brings you right back in!
Tony Stark is, as expected, his arrogant self! His quirky one-liners are awesome as always! His interactions with a new character really bring him back down to earth. Back to where it all started.
Pepper is great! She really steps up to the plate in this one! But what the hell happened to John Favreau? Did he eat his way into this film? Man he put on some weight…

I am not sure if it is because it’s 3:30am or the fact that it is near impossible for me to talk about it without giving away any spoilers! I could rant on and on about OMG THE SCENE WHERE HE & THEN THIS HAPPENED & THEN HE FLEW INTO THIS!!

… It is near impossible!

So, I will leave it at this. Iron Man 3 is great film! The IMAX experience was great! You MUST see this!!

I cannot wait to see this again, and again, and again, and… well you see where this is going!

Oh, and don’t be one of those idiots that leave as soon as the house lights come on! IT IS A MARVEL FILM! There is ALWAYS something a little extra! So I beg you! Hang around for the credits!

LEGO A-Wing Starfighter

Last week I had a really shit day, so I decided a little LEGO Retail Therapy was required to cheer me up. The result was the purchase of my latest Star Wars LEGO set. The A-Wing Starfighter.

Battle the Imperial Fleet with the super-agile A-Wing Starfighter™!
Bring the battle to the evil Empire with the Rebel Alliance’s super-fast A-wing Starfighter! As featured in Star Wars™: Episode VI Return of the Jedi™, the agile A-wing, with an opening cockpit, is perfect for attacking the Imperial Fleet! Build the same lightning-fast ship that destroyed Darth Vader’s Executor! Then, take on the Imperial forces with Admiral Ackbar, an A-wing pilot and Han Solo! source LEGO Wiki

The best thing about this set would have to be the Admiral Akbar mini-fig. He looks so boss with his cup! Like he’s about to kick back & drink the night away.

I guess the poor bloke needs to enjoy life before the next attack on the Death Star. IT’S A TRAP!

The A-Wing Starfighter comes with 3 Mini-Figs: Admiral Ackbar, Han Solo A-Wing Pilot.
